Sheffield’s top record shop

There’s nothing more satisfying for an independent record store, than to be appreciated by enthusiastic music fans. Through a dedication to serving the widest range of tastes and providing a welcoming space for all music lovers, we have built a reputation as Sheffield’s top record shop, and have become a part of the city’s rich musical heritage. We’ve enjoyed patronage from some of the region’s musical greats, met customers who have travelled across the country to visit us, and even featured prominently in a book and documentary. Over the years we’ve received a range of kind comments, feedback and positive media coverage both local and national, a few examples of which you can read below.

Now Then Magazine

What can we add to the story (nay legend!) of Record Collector in the Sheffield suburb of Broomhill? Record Collector opened in 1978 in a small early-Victorian parade of shops in the heyday of vinyl, and expanded into the shop next door in the eighties to enable them to provide a comprehensive compact disc department. And the shop is still there, treasured by many (probably by more than actually ever shop there sadly), serving a die-hard music clientele.

Owner Barry Everard had been to University in the city and walked into a job at Sheffield’s Virgin Records just after they opened in 1973, when they realised as a customer he knew more about their stock than they did. After a while learning the ropes, he was the store manager for four years at a time when Virgin were a properly alternative record shop.
Barry got fed-up with the growing corporate nature of the chain and took a chance opening Record Collector in the heady days of Punk and New Wave, when vinyl collecting was arguably at a peak.
He championed many local bands, giving shelf and window space to their own-label singles, and continues to do so to this day (with at least one band, Gomez, making sure the shop got a gold disc by way of thanks). And he was as happy to stock Def Leppard’s first own pressed single, as he was The Comsat Angels’ debut EP (their singer briefly worked there for a few years.) All the local musicians shopped there including Martin Fry and Phil Oakey. The shop remains a reminder of how our high streets used to be, full of independent traders and family businesses.

Testimonials

Record Collector has featured in numerous lists of top record shops. It was chosen by Graham Jones, author of “Last Shop Standing”, as one of the top five in the UK. Long-term customer and supporter Jarvis Cocker picked the shop as the location for a ten-minute interview with Channel 4 News, broadcast live from the shop on Record Store Day, and Richard Hawley and Martin Simpson organised a surprise gig to celebrate Record Collector’s 33 1/3 anniversary.

Sheffield Telegraph, April 2014.

Sheffield’s largest independent record shop opened its doors in 1978, and has been selling both new and pre-owned vinyl ever since.
Since they were around for the first vinyl craze, it’s safe to say the staff here know a thing or two about high quality records.
They’re also masters at snagging rare and hard to find releases, so if there’s a specific hole in your collection, this is the shop for you.

While our high streets are rapidly becoming a long procession of mobile phone shops and cathedral-sized banking emporiums, we’re glad that Record Collector is weathering the online shopping storm.

Barry Everard has run the shop since the early eighties, amassing a huge stock of over 25,000 titles. You’ll be glad to see all the Sheffield musical greats represented here: Richard Hawley, ABC, Arctic Monkeys, Human League, Pulp… and you might even bump into them paying at the till.

If you know anything at all about the music scene in Sheffield then I’m sure you’ll be familiar with our largest and most impressive independent record store, Record Collector, and probably the man behind it all Mr Barry Everard. This local legend – as noted by Johnny Marr of the Smiths on his last trip to the Steel City – opened the store back in 1978 and has since played a huge part in the ever growing music scene here in Sheffield. A friend to most of our biggest stars, and an inspiration for many, Barry remains grounded and humble, his sights solely set on keeping his customers happy, and always providing a place for people to physically get their hands on the music industry.

Tasha Franek, opusindependents.com, 2014

Thankfully, Record Collector in Broomhill still survives, and it has been a Sheffield institution since it first opened its doors in 1978. It’s a mecca for avid music fans on the hunt for new and second-hand releases, as well as the latest releases by local bands. They put the renewed interest in vinyl down to many factors, with interested parties ranging “from students to people who had turntables 15 to 20 years ago, sold their turntables and entire collections, and are just getting back into the feel and sound of vinyl”.

Last Shop Standing, a documentary based on the book of the same name by Graham Jones, examines the decline of the independent record store – over 500 have closed since 2008 – featuring our very own Richard Hawley being interviewed in Record Collector.
